Here is a scriptural example for the gung-ho, “power of positive thinking,” rugged individual crowd who believe that everyone is responsible for his or her own welfare and that government should mind its own business and stay out of the lives of the people:

“every man fared in this life according to the management of the creature; therefore every man prospered according to his genius, and that every man conquered according to his strength.”

Oh, wait. This is part of the teaching of the Anti-Christ Korihor in The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. Korihor’s teachings, including the foregoing, were exactly opposite to the teachings of the Lord’s prophets at the time. See Alma chap. 30.

I prefer the ‘taking care of one another’ approach in Book of Mormon, Mosiah chap. 21, even if it means the government is involved:

“17 Now there was a great number of women, more than there was of men; therefore king Limhi commanded that every man should impart to the support of the widows and their children, that they might not perish with hunger; and this they did because of the greatness of their number that had been slain.”
